Overview of Household
Setting up a home in Malaysia is generally straightforward, thanks to a wide range of local and international stores. Whether you’re looking for affordable basics, stylish furniture, or unique home décor, you’ll find plenty of options. Many rentals come furnished, however if you prefer to personalise your space, there are stores for every taste and budget.
From well-known names like IKEA and Harvey Norman to hidden gems tucked away in malls or industrial areas, Malaysia makes furnishing a home both convenient and affordable.
Big International Chains
If you want familiar names, IKEA is the most popular choice for expats. It offers affordable furniture, homeware and ready to assemble basics, perfect if you’re setting up from scratch.
Harvey Norman is another big name, specialising in furniture, bedding, and appliances, usually at mid to higher price range.
Courts and AEON Home also provide one-stop shopping for home furniture and electronics, with frequent promotions. These larger stores are reliable, convenient and ideal if you want everything in one place.
Local Furniture and Home Stores
Malaysia also has plenty of local brands that can be more affordable or unique. SSF is popular for mid-range furniture and home décor.
Lorenzo is well known for sofas and leather furniture. Smaller shops like U.JU Home (with branches in malls and suburban areas) often surprise newcomers with trendy designs at competitive prices.
Local family-run furniture stores can also offer good deals, especially in suburban neighbourhoods with delivery and assembly often included.
Home Décor and Lifestyle Shops
For finishing touches and everyday essentials, Kaison is a favourite for budget-friendly décor, cushions, wall art, and storage.
MR.DIY is everywhere! A mix between a hardware store and home goods shop where you can find everything from tools and cleaning products to kitchenware. This will no doubt be your go to store for almost everything!
Daiso, a Japanese store, offers a nice range of small household items, usually priced at RM5.90 each. These shops are perfect for affordable accessories to make your house feel like home.
Secondhand and Vintage Options
If you’re on a budget or want something unique, Malaysia has a strong secondhand market. Facebook Marketplace and Mudah.my are popular for furniture, appliances, and even whole household clear-outs when expats leave.
Just keep in mind that delivery is often DIY unless the seller offers it and items can sell quickly in expat-heavy areas.
Online Shopping
Platforms like Shopee and Lazada are widely used for home items, from furniture to décor and even appliances. Many sellers offer free or low-cost delivery, making it easy to compare prices before you buy.
